OUR
STORY

Director's Note

The journey to How Kids Roll took more than ten years to complete. Set in Gaza during the Second Intifada, the film tells the story of two boys from opposite sides of a conflict one Palestinian and one Israeli who are united by a shared love of surfing.

At its heart, the film is not about politics or war, but about childhood. It explores the dreams, fears, and hopes of children growing up in a world shaped by violence, while reminding us of what they have in common: the desire for friendship, freedom, and a better future.

The sea serves as a symbol of hope and connection, a place without borders where differences lose their meaning. Through the eyes of children, How Kids Roll reveals a side of this reality that is often overlooked, inviting audiences to look beyond conflict and recognize our shared humanity.

Project Statement

How Kids Roll is a cultural initiative dedicated to raising awareness about the impact of war on children, with a particular focus on the lives of young people growing up in Gaza. Through photography, art, storytelling, and public events, the project seeks to give voice to the strength, dignity, and resilience of children living in areas affected by conflict.

Originally inspired by the feature film How Kids Roll, directed by Italian filmmaker Loris Lai, the project has evolved beyond cinema into a platform for education, reflection, and social engagement. Its mission is to encourage audiences to look beyond headlines and statistics and to encounter the human stories behind them stories of childhood, hope, friendship, and survival.

At the heart of the project is a collection of photographs taken during the production of the film. These images capture everyday moments in the lives of children: playing, waiting, imagining, and dreaming. They reveal a reality where innocence and resilience continue to exist despite the presence of conflict and uncertainty.

Alongside the photography, How Kids Roll brings together artistic and cultural contributions that create opportunities for dialogue and understanding. Through exhibitions, live experiences, educational programs, and awareness campaigns, the project invites visitors to see the world through the eyes of children and to reflect on the universal rights that every child deserves.

The initiative also supports charitable efforts and awareness activities dedicated to children living in war-affected regions. Proceeds from artwork sales contribute to donations for children in Gaza and help fund future exhibitions, events, and programs designed to promote children's rights and amplify voices that are too often unheard.

More than an exhibition, a film, or a collection of photographs, How Kids Roll is an invitation to listen. It is a reminder that behind every conflict are children with dreams, fears, and hopes for the future. By sharing their stories, the project aims to foster empathy, understanding, and meaningful action, ensuring that their voices continue to reach audiences around the world.
